Julia Cameron writes, “treating myself as a precious object will make me strong,” in The Artist’s Way and it is true. When we are loved and cared for, we have the energy and presence of mind to love and honor others. If we are frazzled, strained and anxiety ridden it will, of course mar our efforts to be their for others and show up in our full integrity and power. Self love isn’t selfish, anymore than making sure their is air in the tires and gas in the tank prior to giving others a lift is selfish. It is common sense, practical and responsible.

You Are #Worth Loving – August 31st – #Inspiration

Setting an example of self-care lets others know it is okay for them to take care of themselves as well. I have found it works better than fussing over others. Taking loving action allows others to see how we expect to be treated. As Dr. Margaret Paul explains narcissism is expecting others to care for us when we aren’t caring for ourselves.

Sleep Well – August 27th – #Inspiration

Sleep well.

Sleep is absolutely wonderful and needs to be cultivated. I know a certain portion of population get a kick out seeing how little sleep they can get by with, but nothing has a bigger influence on emotional health and the body’s ability to recuperate and recover than sleep. Anyone who has not been getting enough sleep, needs to turn off the television, take a bath and crawl into clean sheets, if possible.  I mean 7:30 or 8:00 pm is not too early if you are sleep deprived and need to catch up. Just lay there with your eyes closed and focus on your breathing and if thoughts come up, simply smile and return to focusing on your breath. Here are some other tips:

  • squeeze-and-release: tense all your muscles for a count of five then relax. Do this three times.
  • visualize: close your eyes and imagine yourself somewhere beautiful and restful.
  • hum: humming relaxes the throat, jaw and chest. try it for five minutes, in a quiet slow monotone.

The Delight of Life – August 26th – #Inspiration

Show yourself some compassion and allow all that you are to be open to the wonder and delight of life.

For me this guidance is about letting go of some of the focus on what we should or shouldn’t do, have to or mustn’t do and instead putting it on what we are choosing to do. Yes, it is important to take care of business and handle self-care. It is also good to carve out some time to refresh our spirits.

Today I danced to the Gabrielle Roth’s 5Rhythms set. I shook it out, stretched into it and let it be. It was fun and when I was done, I turned it off even though there was five minutes left. It was for me.
